The Importance of the Oral Microbiome for your Health.

Oral Microbiome and how it relates to health

I’m delighted to share that I can now offer the Oralis Oral Microbiome Test, pioneered by Dr. Victoria Sampson from The Health Society and recently featured on Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett.

This cutting-edge test gives you an inside look at the unique community of bacteria and fungi living in your mouth — and how they affect not just your oral health, but your whole-body wellbeing

Did You Know? Oral Health by the Numbers

  • Gum Disease & Tooth Decay
Over 50% of UK adults are affected by gum disease, with approximately 15% diagnosed with severe periodontitis which destroys gum tissue and causes bone loss.
  • Neuroinflammation: Emerging research links P. gingivalis to Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline as well as mood disorders.
  • Fatigue, Pain & Brain Fog – Higher levels of inflammatory markers such as IL-1 and TNF-α are strongly linked to increased fatigue, pain, and cognitive impairment in conditions like ME/CFS.
  • Heart & Metabolic Health
Periodontal disease is associated with a 66% increased risk of developing diabetes and higher odds of cardiovascular complications.

  • Genetic insight → Analysis of the top 10 genetic mutations in your mouth that contribute to oral and general disease.

The good news? There are practical steps you can take to nurture a healthier oral ecosystem:

  • Oral probiotics → Strains like Streptococcus salivarius K12 and M18 can help restore microbial balance, calm gum inflammation.  Bio.Me Oral by Invivo is one of my favourites.
  • Tongue scraping → Removes excess bacteria and helps maintain a cleaner oral environment.
  • Flossing – removes food particles and harmful bacteria between teeth, preventing imbalance and inflammation.
  • Microbiome-friendly toothpaste → Choose non-foaming, fluoride-free options that support, rather than disrupt, your microbiome.
  • Support saliva flow → Stay hydrated, check zinc and B-vitamin levels, and avoid unnecessary use of medications that dry the mouth. Xylitol-based gum and improving nasal breathing (nasal strips or guided mouth taping) can also help keep your mouth moist and balanced.
  • Address bruxism → If you grind your teeth at night, it may be linked to stress, airway restriction, or nervous system imbalance. Magnesium (glycinate or threonate), iron repletion, omega-3s, and calming evening routines can ease tension and support better sleep.

These simple habits, paired with accurate testing, can make a real difference to both oral and systemic health.

Minty Dark Chocolate Xylitol Bark

Why it’s good for your teeth

  • Xylitol → star ingredient that fights harmful oral bacteria
  • Dark chocolate (70%+) → rich in polyphenols that may support oral and gut health
  • Nuts & seeds → minerals like magnesium and phosphorus for strong teeth
  • Peppermint → freshens breath naturally

🛒 Ingredients

  • 200g dark chocolate (70% or higher)
  • 3–4 tbsp xylitol granules
  • ½ tsp peppermint extract (optional)
  • 30g chopped nuts/seeds (almonds, pistachios, or pumpkin seeds work great)
  • A pinch of sea salt

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Melt the dark chocolate gently in a heatproof bowl over simmering water (or microwave in short bursts).
  2. Stir in the peppermint extract.
  3. Sprinkle half the chopped nuts/seeds onto a lined baking tray.
  4. Pour melted chocolate evenly over them.
  5. While still warm, sprinkle xylitol granules, remaining nuts/seeds, and a tiny pinch of salt on top.
  6. Chill in the fridge for 30–40 minutes until firm.
  7. Break into shards and enjoy!
